I think that this hits the root of a fundamental technique developers are
ignoring with the GUS (yes, I know that the .MOD wasn't written for the GUS,
just hear me out).
We've all got the patches on our drives somewhere (I've heard of nobody that's
deleted them, anyway) and with the new General Midi patches on the way, it
would be even more enticing.
Game designers should use those patches!  If you need a special sound effect,
then include it, but the GUS patches are good and redundantly storing
instrument patches of your own is wasteful.  Case in point, the MIDI version
of Beosendo is 16,037 bytes, while the .MOD version is 216,890 bytes -- I
think the Midi version is better, BTW.
Espescially folks like Sierra, whose sound is mostly music with a little
digital thrown in.

  I've tried this, the sound EFFECTS still do not work.  I've tried
SBOS 1.20, 1.22 and 1.23 with all sixteen combinations of -x and -o.
Note that the music works fine.  Are you sure that your sound effects
work (i.e. guns firing, bomb explosions, etc.)?   I have also tried
running the SOUNDSET program with music set to AdLib and Effects set
to SoundBlaster, no go (with or without patch).
  For the record I have a Gateway 2000 486-66V Vesa Local bus system
with 8Mb of Ram.
  All in all I'm disappointed with GUS SoundBlaster compatiblilty.  If
anyone is buying a GUS for game playing, think twice.

I tried his suggestion and to my surprise. It works. Install the patch,
run soundset.exe and select SB for all the sound output. The sound effects
and speech are a bit soft so you might want to turn off the music.

  I have talked with Chris Yuzik of Advanced Gravis, and he
  stated that the 16-bit daughter card will *NOT* have onboard
  DSP.

  This is fine for me since I have an outboard effects box, and
  will probably us the card to record dry tracks direct-to-disk
  (i.e., with no effects).  I will then either use my outboard
  effects processor or find software which will work directly on
  the bits to add effects later on.  Most professional studios
  record their tracks dry and add EQ, delay, chorusing, etc.,
  later.

My GUS card came with the Phillips LMSI CM-205 CDROM, and I am
having some problems trying to play some of the video clips that
produce no sound in Grollier Encycl. (ver. 5.0).  The installation
says the sound can come thru as regular audio CD or thru the
Soundblaster card.  I followed the instructions to set up the
Soundblaster driver and try to run SBOS to emulate it, but it still
doesn't work.  The regular audio CD playback fine but there is no sound
when video animation is on.

Is there any kind soul out there who can help me to solve this problem?

It works fine for me with no options (and all kinds of QEMM stuff loaded).
I used the 16Mhz mixing rate on my 486/50 eisa.  Oh and its v1.22 of SBOS.

Well everyone, I finally beat the busy signal and logged onto the Gravis
BBS! :) So here is the latest bulletin although it may not be too recent
(less than a week old anyways).

SPECIAL NOTE: Globalizing Gravis BBS via Fidonet
------------------------------------------------

Please make special notice below concerning the Gravis BBS being on
Fidonet, and request for any BBS worldwide with Fidonet access to carry
it. If you want local modem access to the Gravis BBS, ask your local
favorite BBS with Fidonet access to become an authorized Gravis Fidonet
node. Or if you are a sysop yourself, please consider being an official
Gravis node. I will post instructions as soon as they are available.

It'd be great for everyone with or without Internet access to be able
to access a public forum like the Gravis BBS through local BBSs. And the
new sysop is a full time sysop so he has been answering every question
that has been asked on the BBS! Wow! Sure a change from the original
Gravis BBS. :) So everyone worldwide would be able to call a local
number through their modem and make use of global communication, group
discussions.... all the wonderful things we have been doing here except
now all can do this (meaning even those without Usenet or Internet
access). So please find out if you can get a local Fidonet node to
become an offical Gravis node, and who knows, we might be able to get
global local support without a 1-800 number. In fact, this is better
than a 1-800 tech support cause not only do you get answers from Gravis,
you get experience and discussions from others as well. Again, all the
wonderful things we've enjoyed being the privileged ones with access to
Usenet. :) Can't wait till Gravis get this going!

    Important News

      ~ Due to the sudden popularity in the Gravis BBS it is becomming more
        difficult to get online.  There are some points I wish to make you
        all aware of.

        ~ In the next few weeks we will be offering any BBS SysOp who has
          a FidoNET node number the chance to become an Authorized Gravis
          Node.  There are two reasons for this.  First it will save our
          customers long distance cost by being able to call someone a
          little closer to them.  Also it will help relieve pressure on
          our BBS.

        ~ There are no current plans to increase the number of incomming
          lines to the BBS.  At least until after we have moved
          offices. (May)

         ~ The BBS is usually down between 9am-12pm Mon-Fri PST.  This is
           the only time that I may do BBS maintenance.  I will try and
           keep it offline as little as possible.

         ~ I would like to ask more of you to use the offline mail reader.
           It saves you time and will allow others to get online.

       ~ Many of you have been asking me to put the V1.22 UltraSound Install
         disks online.  The answer is no.  Version 1.22 was not suppose to
         be distributed and DOES contain known problems. So I will not be
         posting it here.

       ~ I made a mistake in the text of the upgrade form.  In the text it
         said that Air Combat Chuck Yeager was $14 US, this should have read
         $15 US.  This has been corrected.

       ~ You will find the Version 3.1 of the MAC MouseStick II software
         in area 9 in the file menu.

     Questions of the Week
     ---------------------
       ~ If your path statement is longer than 128 characters and SETUP
         crashes you will need to shorten it.  This problem is being
         worked on.

       ~ Do NOT run SBOS in a DOS box under Windows.  Your computer WILL
         crash.  There may be a future version of SBOS that will run under
         Windows.

     Mail & Networks
     ---------------
       ~ Gravis BBS is now part of the Sound Blaster Connection NETwork. Our
         SBCNET node number is 13:900/3.  SBCNET is a dedicated PC sound
         card messaging and file network that is very big in Europe, and
         Australlia.  And is starting to make a big move into North America.

         Currently the echo message areas are only available to the staff.
         I will be making the SBCNET GUS file areas available to everyone
         when they become avaialable.

       ~ In a reply to a users question in the Gravis Tech message area I
         incorrectly told someone that they could not record in 16 bit
         unless they were using a 16 bit DMA channel.  This was INCORRECT.
         You can still record in 16 bit with an 8 bit DMA channel.

       ~ I have updated the PRODUCT INFORMATION area.  You will now find
         specifications on all of our products, online.

       ~ Some people have noticed when they run the OPTiFIX program, which I
         made available last week, that SBOS will no longer run.  You will
         notice in the tech note that I say DMA channels 0-3 will be
         disabled.  SBOS uses DMA channel 1, which is why it won't work.

         The OPTiFix program was written for those of you who want to use a
         16 bit DMA channel with the GUS.

     Files
     -----
       ~ I have been asked to put some MIDI files online.  Howerver, I will
         not do this until the new patches are out.  Trust me, they sound
         much better with the new patches and I don't want anyone to be
         disappointed with the quality of the MIDI files using the old ones.

       ~ There are many new files online including two new VGA demos written
         specifically to support the GUS.  They are DARETRO by Rennaissance,
         and TZJUNGLY by Twilight Zone.

You can load SBOS into high memory with QEMM or EMM386. Works fine with me!
Loading SBOS high is slower than loading it in conventional memory, though.

Only in DOS boxes with 8-bit DMA channels. There is no OS/2 driver YET (Gravis:
hint, hint).

You have the correct version of Links (1.07 which has the fixes)
and the correct SBOS (1.22 which works for me). The only thing wrong
is your setup.  SB itself is hardcoded to be able to use only a select
set of IRQs only.  Sorry, I don't have the numbers in front of me, but
you HAVE TO use something like IRQ 5, IRQ 7... not sure about 2 even
though it shows up in the list for Links cause I think something else
like video uses IRQ 2. So try IRQ 5 or 7. Then you shouldn't need
any parameters for SBOS cause you have the right versions of the
other softwares.

By the way, since Links 386 Pro is not a music oriented game like
other computer games are, you don't gain much by having any soundcards
for it. What comes out of the speakers are pretty well what you're
going to get through your soundcard (the occassional background noise,
and the comments after your made your shot). The sounds from your
PC speakers is about as good as it's going to get.

med135 mod editor is a definite step in the right direction 'coz you can
alter the convey path in the med.ini to use gusmod11 and the thing will
do a native mode gus playback.

I must admit that I wasnt able to make it do much though- just swap around
a couple of patterns.  I also managed to hang it a couple of times  the
cursor got "stuck" away from the quit button.  Guess I'll have to RTFM.

Also ( I mentioned this before ) I tried removing the memory from my trident
card to put in the GUS.  Sadly though even though the chips looked like the
correct sort I couldnt get the trident to work with 1/2 a meg!! This is
doubly a pity as the local electronics shoppe doesnt seem to stock 100ns
44256's

Any news on the developers kit?  Or how we get a beta version of it?  What I've
heard from UK tech support is that the developers kit is still beta and
making it "proper" is not a priority.  Can anyone in touch with Gravis in
Canada confirm or deny this? ta

There ought to be a batch file writing util that comes with DOS or at
least a tutorial cause this is a problem EVERYONE runs into until they
ask or reads about it. But what they're doing makes so much sense that
they don.t see it....

ANYWAYS, the proper way to run a batch file (like SBOS.BAT) within a
batch file (like AUTOEXEC.BAT) is to use the CALL statement (like CALL
SBOS). Even though just running SBOS within AUTOEXEC will work, it
doesn't retrun control back to the original batch file unless you use
CALL. DOS should really make it so that you can't run a batch file
within a batch file without the CALL statement, to force everyone to
read the manual or ask. Cause it's so obvious to just run the thing just
like in DOS and it does work... sort of. So anyways, use "call sbos"
instead of just plain sbos.

As for the freezing.... you need the new driver. And while you're at it,
might as well get the new of everything cause we got us a ftp site with
the latest and greatest stuff along with all sorts of other neat
programs to play with.... megabytes worth. And this will also coincide
with your question about the mailing  list cause I'm just going to
enclose my form letter below with the info....

Hi there. You (and anyone else who has or plans to buy the Gravis
Ultrasound) should read the newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.
And join the Ultrasound mailing list (free to those with email access).
Gravis themselves are on the mailing list to answer questions, along
with several hundred techies and hackers who've done all sorts of things
for the Ultrasound and made all sorts of software available for it. In
fact, the fellow who did the music for Star Control II (which really
shows off why the Ultrasound is one generation above the other FM stereo
soundcards like Sound Blaster Pro, PAS 16, Adlib....etc) is also on this
list. Please join the list.

There is also an archive available for the Ultrasound which is
mirrored to 2 ftp sites and a mailserver for those without ftp access.
On these sites, there are all sorts of programs for the Ultrasound, info
files, announcements from Gravis, demo files to show off your
Ultrasound, and yes, there are a number of software updates from Gravis
already, including a new set of install disks, a new setup program and a
beta version of SBOS which looks like has cleaned up just about all the
problems the old SBOS had. And these are free for downloading. There is
also a Gravis BBS for those who doesn't have access to Internet but if
you are reading this, then you probably have Internet access. Anyways, a
lot of functions are done in software (like SB/Adlib emulation, Windows
drivers....etc so getting fixes or updates is as easy as downloading
the latest version of the software... for free!).

It's a wierd one, sure, but I suppose it _COULD_ happen...

One relay, some tone-generating and sampling software, and VOILA!  Your
UltraSound is now a modem!

Really, the sound quality of the GUS (and of _ANY_ 16 bit card, for that
matter) exceeds the phone lines, so why not!  It'd take a little adapter
and a lot of horsepower to recognize the various tones, but it'd be an

Has anyone here succeeded in getting Trax working with the GUS ?
While it recognizes the Gravis Ultrasound Synth in Goodies/Midi Setup...
I cannot get it to produce any sound. (Other Windows Applications work great
with my GUS 768k populated).

Please help.

I presume you are trying to use a MIDI master keyboard to trigger the
instruments on the soundboard (GUS or PAS). The easiest way would be to
simply connect the keyboard to the sound board directly, without going the
way thru the MPU-401. Both these soundboards are capable of that. I don't
know how the situation is for the PAS, but for the GUS, all you need is a
Sound Blaster connector cable, a 6N138 or -139-chip, and a couple of 5.6Kohm
resistors. Replace the on-board 6N136 with the -138 or -139, and solder the
resistors between pin 5-7 and 6-8 of the chip. You will then be able to hook
a MIDI keyboard directly up to the GUS, and using a sequencer program, you
can play the GUS instruments.

Well, if I understand your needs right, the GUS would be a better deal.
Although it only can do 8-bit samples yet, you still have the freedom to use
*any* waveform sample as an instrument. On the PAS, you're limited to the
low-quality sounds the FM-synthesizer can produce. You can actually get the
16-bit daughterboard and the GUS for about the same price as the PAS (in
your situation). Unless you can find a program that play waveforms when
triggered from the MIDI-port, that is.

Hate to followup once again, but I had a bit of time to experiment over
the weekend.

By setting the GUS back to the factory defaults in the manual and running
the setup program for KQ5, I was able to get music and dialogue by using
only the -X3 setting wityh SBOS 1.23.  Any other setting gave me random
lockups.

Of course, I am running this on a '386sx16, so I get lots of pauses and
freezes due to the slow machine.

The music from KQ5 is ok most of the time, but inside the shops the music is
full of stuttering and static.  The dialog is good.  By playing with the
adjustment levers I was able to finally get the sound/animation to sync.

well, even the cheapest of stereos have headphone outs.  if you put your
stereo on a reletively low setting, the output you'll get will be comparable to
the level of a line out.  get a stereo 1/8" to 1/8" or 1/4" to 1/8" patch cord
[depending on what size your headphone out is; GUS takes a 1/8", of course] and
you'll be in business.

    Yeah.  My dad's computer (that didn't have any sound card in it) did the
same funny thing as well.  I checked all the INI files (I think it was
system.ini I found it in), and I found a parity= something line in it.  I
commented it out, and it works fine now.  Hardly ever crashes.
